March 2, 2021GE Dryer Making Noise? Common Causes and What to Check
A GE dryer making noise can quickly become frustrating, especially when the sound keeps repeating every time you run a load. While some dryer sounds are normal, others can be a sign that a part is worn, loose, or starting to fail.
If your dryer is squeaking, thumping, grinding, chirping, or humming more than usual, it may be time to look more closely at the cause. Below are a few common reasons a GE dryer may be running louder than normal.
Normal GE Dryer Sounds
Like most household appliances, dryers are expected to make some noise during normal operation. A light sound from the drum turning or a brief squeak right as the dryer starts may not always mean something is wrong.
In some cases, a GE dryer may make a short squeaking noise when first starting and then quiet down after a few minutes. If the sound is brief and does not continue through the cycle, it may be part of normal operation.
Abnormal Dryer Noises
If the dryer begins making louder or more persistent noises, the issue may need attention. Sounds that are more likely to point to a problem include:
- Repeated squeaking or chirping during the cycle
- Thumping sounds that continue as the drum turns
- Grinding noises
- Humming sounds that seem unusual or louder than normal
- Noises that appear only after the dryer heats up
If the sound becomes more noticeable as the dryer runs, a worn or damaged internal part may be the cause.
Common Reasons a GE Dryer Is Making Noise
Loose or Worn Drive Belt
The drive belt wraps around the dryer drum, tension pulley, and motor. Over time, the belt can wear down, loosen, or begin to fray. If that happens, it may create squeaking or other unusual noises while the dryer is running.
Worn Drum Rollers
Drum rollers help support the drum as it turns. Many dryers have rollers at the back, and some models also have additional rollers at the front. When these rollers wear out, they may begin to squeak, rumble, or thump during operation.
If one roller is worn, it is often a good idea to inspect the full set and replace worn parts together where appropriate.
Damaged Drum Bearing
The drum bearing helps the drum rotate smoothly. If the bearing becomes worn, the dryer may start making grinding, squeaking, or scraping noises. A damaged bearing can also make the drum harder to turn and may affect overall dryer performance.
When to Book Professional Dryer Repair
If your GE dryer is making unusual noise repeatedly, taking too long to dry, or showing signs of worn internal parts, professional service may help prevent a larger breakdown. Continued use of a noisy dryer can sometimes lead to more wear on other components.
