January 8, 2021Gas Range Burner Sparking? What to Check First
Gas range burner sparking can be frustrating, especially when the clicking continues after the burner should already be lit or when the burner is turned off. In many cases, the issue is caused by moisture, food debris, misaligned burner parts, or an ignition problem that needs attention.
At EAS Repair & Installation, we provide appliance service across Toronto and the GTA, including oven and range repair. If your gas range burner keeps sparking, here are some of the most common causes and the first things to check.
Common Causes of Gas Range Burner Sparking
1. Moisture Around the Burner or Ignition Area
After cleaning or a spill, moisture can get into the burner head, cap, or switch area and cause the igniter to keep clicking. This is one of the most common reasons a gas range burner starts sparking unexpectedly.
2. Dirty Burner Parts
Food debris, grease, or residue around the burner ports or igniter can interfere with normal ignition. Even a small amount of buildup can cause repeated clicking or trouble lighting.
3. Burner Cap or Head Is Misaligned
If the burner cap is not sitting flat or the burner parts are not positioned correctly, the spark may not ignite the gas properly. That can lead to repeated sparking or clicking.
4. Ignition Switch or Spark Module Problem
If the burner keeps sparking after cleaning and drying, the issue may be with the ignition switch, spark module, or another internal component. At that point, professional diagnosis is usually the better next step.
What to Check First
Dry the Burner Area
If the problem started after cleaning or a spill, allow the burner area to dry thoroughly. Moisture in the burner or switch area can cause continued sparking.
Clean the Burner Parts
Remove the grate and burner cap if your model allows it, and clean away grease or food debris. Make sure the burner ports and igniter area are free of buildup before reassembling.
Make Sure the Burner Cap Is Sitting Correctly
Reinstall the burner cap and burner head carefully so everything sits flat and in the correct position. A misaligned burner cap is a common cause of repeated clicking.
Check That the Knob Is Fully Off
If the igniter is clicking when the burner is not in use, make sure the control knob has fully returned to the off position.
Consider Vent or Draft Conditions
On some gas cooktops and ranges, strong airflow or downdraft ventilation can affect the flame and cause continued sparking while the appliance tries to re-ignite the burner.
When Gas Range Burner Sparking Is Normal
A clicking sound is normal when a burner is first turned to the ignition position. On some models, you may also hear more than one burner click during ignition even though only one burner is being used.
The issue becomes more concerning when the sparking continues after ignition, happens when the burner is off, or keeps returning after cleaning and drying.
When to Stop and Call for Service
- The burner keeps sparking even after drying and cleaning
- The burner will not light properly
- The clicking continues when all burners are off
- You notice repeated ignition problems
- You suspect an internal ignition or electrical fault
If you smell unburned gas, stop using the appliance right away. Open windows, avoid touching electrical switches, avoid open flames, and contact your gas supplier or a qualified technician.
